Melvin Berger, MD, PhD, is professor of pediatrics and pathology at Case Western Reserve University and director of the Jeffrey Modell Center for Primary Immune Deficiencies in the Allergy-Immunology Division of Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospital in Cleveland. He earned both his MD and PhD degrees at Case Western. Dr. Berger is a retired colonel of the U.S. Army Reserve Medical Corps, having served active duty at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in support of Operation Desert Storm/Shield, and at the 324th Combat Support Hospital in Taszar, Hungary in support of Operation Joint Guard (peace effort in former Yugoslavia).

Dr. Berger is licensed to practice medicine in the state of Ohio. He is certified by the National Board of Medical Examiners, the American Board of Pediatrics, and the American Board of Allergy and Immunology. Dr. Berger’s professional organizations include the American Association of Immunologists, the Society for Pediatric Research, the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology, the American Academy of Pediatrics, the American Federation for Clinical Research, the American Society of Clinical Investigation, and the Clinical Immunology Society. He is also on advisory committees for the Immune Deficiency Foundation and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, and is an ad hoc reviewer for several publications.

Dr. Berger’s current research interests include immunochemistry and immunology, host defense mechanisms and defects, complement receptor expression during neutrophil activation, and control of inflammation in cystic fibrosis lung disease. He has been recognized annually since 2001 as one of America’s Top Doctors by Castle Connolly Medical Limited.
